Perlite

Perlite is an amorphous volcanic glass. It is formed by the sudden cooling of lava. It has a very high water content due to the hydration of the obsidian. It can greatly expand up to 4-20 times its original size when exposed to rapid heating above 870 degrees Celsius.

Ekopons Perlite is used in two forms as Crude Perlite & Expanded Perlite in many commercial applications including the construction and manufacturing fields. Some industries that prefer Ekopons Perlite are;

Scoria

Scoria is a basaltic or andesitic, mostly dark reddish-brown colored, vesicular volcanic rock. It has a similar formation with pumice but in contrast, scoria sinks in water due to higher density and the iron content which gives it a darker color. The iron composition of scoria (around 7,5%) is much higher compared to the 1% level found in pumice.

Ekopons Scoria is mostly preferred for ground cover in landscaping. Its earth like color, decoration and drainage properties make it attractive for landscape architects and gardeners. It is also popular as a heat sink in gas barbecue grills, by holding the heat and absorbing grease and liquids.

Pumice For Landscaping

Pumice, with outstanding properties of being lightweight, easily processable, economical and resistant to atmospherical conditions is widely preferred in landscape architecture. Pumice holds water and fertilizer nutrients in its pores, as a result of which watering is stabilized and plant maintenance becomes easier to follow. It does not require drainage channels where used. Landscaping sector favors from pumice in:

Green roofs & green walls
Landscape / lawn areas
Green parks and gardens
Golf courses, football pitches, tennis courts, etc.

The effective use of pumice in these areas, pure or mixed with organic substrates of different nature, provides optimum results in soil productivity and plant health.

It does not add much of an extra weight to the buildings and does not increase the minimum static requirements of construction. Pumice also provides high heat and sound insulation, helping to reduce energy costs of the building and protect the environment.

Lawn areas are greener and healthier with pumice for a longer period. Pumice provides optimum drainage and water retention properties contributing to cost saving in irrigation & fertilization.

Pumice as a Soil Conditioner & Growing Medium: Heavy, expansive soil with clay is unfavorable to lawn and root development in plants. Pumice provides the necessary moisture balance of soil with excellent aeration and gas exchange in the root zone, letting an ideal setting for rooting and germination.

Pumice for Soilless Culture: Hydroponic growing system is a technique that uses pumice as a medium in a setting where soil is replaced with various nutrients such as potassium, nitrogen, phosphorus and magnesium. Minerals are applied directly to the roots, pumice absorbs and delivers these nutrients sufficiently due to its porous structure. It is a perfect raw material choice for soilless culture due to its exceptional water retention capacity.

Pumice For Construction

Ekopons Mining is the main producer and exporter of pumice aggregates for the construction sector and the sole supplier of the pumice for Poncebloc –Arkas’ affiliate in the construction industry producing lightweight wall blocks with pumice- www.poncebloc.com.tr

Kayseri pumice is known to be the lightest pumice all around the world with its fully-dried density of 300-400 kg/m3. Ekopons implements a special purification process where pumice dust and all non-pumice ingredients are eliminated. As a result of this special treatment, fully-dried density of pumice can be reduced below 300 kg/m3.

The porous structure of Kayseri pumice together with the purification process enables production of light-weight blocks with the highest insulation values. (i.e. Poncebloc –d190mm; h240mm; w490mm- has a heat insulation of ʎ=0,11 W/mK, and a dry weight of only 8,0 kg.) This value promotes construction of A+ energy saving buildings. Additionally, blocks produced with Ekopons Pumice are A1 Non-Combustible.

Sharing the same facilities and technical staff with Poncebloc, Ekopons is able to support the customers abroad with technical know-how for lightweight block production with Kayseri pumice. Ekopons customers are welcome to Poncebloc factory for technical trainings, discussions, etc.

Pumice For Stonewash

A fashionable, faded and naturally aged look on denim is accomplished by a special stonewashing treatment with pumice. Denim industry uses pumice stone especially in acid wash (also named as snow wash, moon wash or marble wash) and river wash processes. These processes require washed & rounded, high in silica content white pumice to achieve the worn look and the softened fabric.
